The Proposed Site and Maps

the old brighton farm

Applications for sand and gravel extraction (aggregate mining) for both sides of US-12 have been submitted to Cambridge Township. The proposed site will start on the South side of US 12 and eventually include operations on the North side of US 12 along Person Highway.  The entire property is over 300+ acres in the heart of the Irish Hills. Gravel mining operations will likely last for decades. Once the mining operation begins the damage is irreversible.

The Irish Hills is rich in glacial deposits that produce much sought after sand and gravel, known as aggregate.  Allowing mining operations in the sensitive ecosystem of "The Irish Hills" is a bad idea, for many reasons including: The fragile water system, watersheds, wetlands, woodlands, and wildlife. The deadly consequences to human health and traffic safety. And the negative impact to property values.

Once gravel pits begin here in the Irish Hills, they will start popping up in your neighborhood too! Mining companies are looking to profit, and they don't care where they find opportunities, next to schools, residential neighborhoods, farms, and yes, even lakes and streams.  Our precious resources are already being choked out, we don't need more destruction of our rolling landscapes and ecosystems by allowing gravel pits in sensitive areas.
